What Gets You to Succeed?
“Persistence and action in the face of adversity are what get you success.”
- Dan Rochon
Episode Summary
The Power of Persistence and Action
When we talk about success, most people think it’s about talent, timing, or connections. But I’ve learned over the years that it usually comes down to something much simpler—persistence and action.
Recently, I started reading a book about Theodore Roosevelt. One of my habits is reading biographies and historical books about people who achieved success in all kinds of fields. I’ve read about presidents, entrepreneurs, athletes—you name it. I like to see what drives them, what habits they build, and what lessons they leave behind.
This morning, while organizing my house, I was listening to the Roosevelt audiobook on Audible. It’s a long one—about 30 hours—and I’m only an hour in. But even that short time gave me a lesson I couldn’t ignore.
The Lesson From a Scrawny Kid
Roosevelt wasn’t the picture of strength or confidence growing up. He was a scrawny kid with asthma who constantly got beat up. At one point, he asked his father for boxing lessons. And even then, after getting the lessons, he wasn’t good at it. He lost again and again.
But here’s what stood out—he never stopped. He kept showing up. He didn’t let his weakness define him. Over time, he transformed himself into someone completely different.
Think about that. The same boy who was weak, sickly, and constantly defeated grew into one of the most respected presidents in U.S. history. Not because of luck, and not because of privilege—but because he refused to quit.
What That Means for You
It’s easy to feel stuck when things don’t go your way. Maybe your business isn’t where you want it to be. Maybe you’ve been putting in the effort but haven’t seen the results yet. When that happens, it’s tempting to slow down, to question if it’s even worth it.
But the truth is, success doesn’t come to the most talented person—it comes to the one who keeps showing up.
Your circumstances might not be perfect. You might feel like you’re behind. But persistence and action can change that. Every call, every follow-up, every uncomfortable step forward adds up. That’s how success is built—one consistent action at a time.
A Challenge for You
The next time life throws something at you that feels unfair or discouraging, don’t dwell on it. Recognize it, label it for what it is, then take action anyway.
Roosevelt didn’t stop training just because he was bad at boxing. He kept going until it became part of who he was. You can do the same.
So wherever you are right now, keep going. Stay persistent. Take action even when it’s uncomfortable—especially when it’s uncomfortable.
And remember, being consistent doesn’t just build success—it builds character.
Until next time, be grateful, make good choices, help someone, and have the best day of your life. You might just find a listing waiting for you when you do.
