The Importance of Communication in Your Career

"When you understand how you like to be treated, you gain the clarity to treat others with the same respect and kindness."

- Dan Rochon

Episode Summary

What does it mean to be respected? How do you know when someone is truly listening to you—or when they’re being kind to you?

These are questions I often ask agents I coach, because communication always starts with self-awareness. Before you can communicate effectively with others, you have to understand what matters to you, what makes you feel valued, and how you define respect.

When you gain that clarity, you can reflect it outward. You’ll not only align better with the right people and the right culture, but you’ll also become a stronger communicator—and that can completely transform your business.

The Lesson I Learned from My Daughter’s Preschool

Years ago, my daughter was enrolled in a Montessori school in Arlington. We later moved her to another Montessori closer to our new home in Clifton, and at first, I thought the new school wasn’t as good.

Then I realized something: it wasn’t the quality of the teaching that made the difference. It was the communication.

At her first school, the teacher would text, call, or email multiple times a week. She kept us constantly updated. At the new school, there was almost nothing. The difference was crystal clear—the first one overcommunicated.

That’s when it clicked for me: in any relationship—especially with clients—communication is everything.

Why Overcommunication Builds Trust

In real estate, I expect my team to communicate with clients at least once a day. It might sound excessive, but think about what happens when you do:

You build trust.
You create security.
You set clear expectations.

When clients hear from you regularly, they don’t feel ignored or anxious about what’s happening. They understand the process, and that reduces the chance of misunderstandings—especially when it comes to sensitive issues like price adjustments or timelines.

Communication Gives You Freedom

There’s also a practical side to all of this.

When you communicate proactively, you gain the freedom to manage your time better. You can take a Saturday off or end work at 6 p.m. without worrying that your clients will feel abandoned.

Your clients don’t just deserve your attention—they deserve a well-rested you.

That’s the beauty of strong communication. It not only strengthens relationships but also helps you build a sustainable business and a balanced life.

Final Thoughts

Communication isn’t just about words—it’s about connection. It’s about understanding yourself first, and then extending that same understanding to others.

When you do, you create a culture of respect and trust, both within your team and with your clients.

Until next time, be grateful, make good choices, help someone, and go have the best day of your life—and you’ll find your next listing.
