Turning Your Weakness Into Strength
“When a behavior serves you and others, it’s a strength. When it gets in your way, it’s a weakness.”

Episode Summary
How to Turn “Weaknesses” Into Strategic Strengths
Welcome back to the No Broke Months for Real Estate Agents blog. I’m Dan Rochon, and today I want to challenge something you’ve probably believed for a long time: the idea that some traits are strengths, and others are weaknesses.
Truth is? That’s not how human behavior actually works.
A behavior isn’t good or bad by itself. It becomes a strength when it helps you and others. It becomes a weakness when it holds you—or others—back.
The Power of Perspective
Let’s take stubbornness. That’s usually labeled as a weakness, right?
But what if we call it tenacity instead?
When you’re pushing through a tough deal, refusing to quit, staying committed to your client’s success—that same stubbornness becomes a superpower.
Now let’s flip it. You’re pushing forward even when the strategy clearly isn’t working. You ignore feedback. You dig in just to prove a point.
That same trait? Now it’s a liability.
Another Example: Being Reserved
Let’s say you’re the quiet type.
That can be a strength—you think before you speak, you analyze details, you listen when others are talking. Clients often trust you more because they feel heard.
But if being reserved stops you from speaking up, asking for the business, or making a bold move when it counts? Then that same trait becomes a weakness.
See where I’m going with this?
The Trait Inventory Exercise
One of the most useful tools I share with my agents is what I call a Trait Inventory.
It’s simple:
Write down the behaviors you show up with consistently—especially the ones you second-guess.
Ask: When does this behavior serve me and others?
Ask: When does this behavior get in my way—or get me in the way of others?
This exercise gives you a compass. It shifts how you see yourself—and helps you adjust in real-time, instead of defaulting to the same patterns again and again.
The Real Definition of a Strength
Here’s how I define it:
When a behavior serves you and others, it's a strength. When it gets in your way or gets you in the way of others, it's a weakness.
That lens removes judgment. It lets you focus on function, not feelings.
And that awareness? That’s how you grow. That’s how you lead. That’s how you stop sabotaging your potential without even knowing it.
Final Thought
Every trait you have has two sides. It’s not about changing who you are—it’s about choosing how you use what you already have.
