What Makes An Agent Not Take Action?
“The fear of rejection is really the fear of humiliation, judgment, ridicule—something rooted in a moment when you were five years old.”
- Dan Rochon
Episode Summary
Why Agents Struggle to Take Action
A common struggle among real estate agents is knowing what to do but not doing it.
The number one reason for that?
Fear of rejection.
But fear of rejection usually isn’t about being told “no.” It’s often something much deeper, including:
Fear of humiliation
Fear of being judged
Fear of ridicule
Fear of not being accepted
Fear of not being good enough
These fears are often built into us at a young age—typically around five years old—when something happens that makes us decide we need to protect ourselves from ever feeling that way again.
A Realization That Changed Everything
After reflecting on my own experience, I discovered a memory from when I was a kid:
I was playing on the playground.
I followed the rules of the game, acted with care, and got made fun of for it.
That moment shaped how I viewed rejection, vulnerability, and acceptance.
The impact of those childhood moments doesn’t disappear. They show up in our adult lives—especially in business.
That early decision to avoid rejection can resurface as hesitation to make prospecting calls, fear of judgment during open houses, or resistance to follow up with leads.
What You Can Do Right Now
If lead generation or outreach makes you anxious, here’s a process you can try:
Identify the earliest moment in your life where you felt rejected or left out.
Reflect on how that moment might still be influencing your behavior today.
Revisit that memory from your perspective as an adult.
Reassure yourself that you're no longer in that situation, and that you're capable of handling whatever comes next.
This isn’t just mindset work—it’s leadership of self.
What Changes When You Let Go of That Fear
Once you identify and release that old fear, several things start to shift:
You stop hesitating when it’s time to make calls.
You stop making up stories about how people will react.
You gain confidence, not from scripts, but from clarity.
You begin to act consistently, without the weight of past rejection.
And when action becomes consistent, results follow.
Final Thoughts
The tools of success—CRM, scripts, training—are only effective when you’re willing to use them. If something’s been holding you back, there’s likely a reason for it that goes deeper than discipline.
Find it. Face it. Let it go.
And then go lead generate with freedom.
Until the next post—
Be grateful.
Make good choices.
Help someone.
And go find your next listing.
